NIST efforts critical as U.S. consumers look to cut energy costs

Parks Associates announced today that George Arnold, National Coordinator for Smart Grid Interoperability, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), U.S. Department of Commerce, will deliver the afternoon keynote “NIST Smart Grid Interoperability Standards and the Home Area Network” at Smart Energy Summit.

Smart Energy Summit: Engaging the Consumer, hosted by Parks Associates in cooperation with Austin Energy on January 25-27 at the Hyatt Regency, Austin, Tex., focuses on the opportunities and challenges in residential energy technologies and identifies business strategies for in-home energy monitoring and management systems.

Sessions will include research from Parks Associates’ Residential Energy Management project, which features nationwide consumer surveys and industry profiles to assess the market for energy-related digital systems and services. The most recent consumer survey reports 80-85% of U.S. households are willing to pay for in-home energy monitors if these solutions can lower their electric bills.

In his keynote on January 26, 1:45 p.m., Dr. Arnold will discuss the challenges that need to be addressed in developing the interface between the Smart Grid and the Home Area Network. NIST is coordinating the development of a robust, interoperable framework of technical standards that will help transform the nation’s electric infrastructure into an “energy internet.”

Dr. Arnold was appointed National Coordinator for Smart Grid Interoperability at the NIST in April 2009. He is responsible for leading the development of standards underpinning the nation’s Smart Grid. He joined NIST in September 2006 after a 33-year career in the telecommunications and information technology industry.

Fancast Xfinity TV rolled out by Comcast

Comcast has rolled out an on-demand, streaming TV service, Fancast Xfinity TV, which will be available to those who subscribe to both Comcast’s digital cable and internet services.

Xfinity contains 2,000+ hours of content, and includes shows - and indeed, entire seasons of shows - from content partners including HBO, Cinemax, Starz, TNS, TNT, A&E, AMC, Discovery Channel, History, and BBC America.

The move is considered the biggest step so far in the cable industry’s TV Everywhere initiative, which hopes to keep the cable TV model viable and profitable as viewers increasingly move to the web to watch free programming.

“It’s our goal to allow a customer who buys a package of content from Comcast to access that content on any screen at any time,” Amy Banse, president of Comcast’s interactive-media unit, said during a demonstration to reporters (via the Wall Street Journal). “We think this is yet another step in that direction.”

Pay-TV providers missing the middle market for gaming

Premium pay-TV gaming features do not currently maximize the market’s revenue potential, according to a new report from international research firm Parks Associates.

Many pay-TV providers, including Comcast, Cablevision, DISH Network, and DirecTV, offer premium packages that include simple, single-player games. Gaming ARPU: Games & the Service Provider finds roughly 5% of broadband households in North America and Western Europe are willing to pay about $5 per month for a premium gaming feature, the current average cost per game.

The number of subscribers would increase threefold if cost per game were lowered to $2.50. In the U.S. in particular, the boost in adoption rates would push annual revenues for single-player TV games over $300 million. Every country surveyed had similar growth in interest except the U.K., where the adoption increase would not compensate for the lower price point.

“Pay-TV providers are leaving money on the table,” said John Barrett, Director, Research, Parks Associates. “The industry’s attention is split between free gaming and more expensive, advanced features. Between the two extremes is an opportunity that has not been fully exploited.”

Despite this finding, Barrett predicts providers will continue to focus their efforts elsewhere. “Most service providers are giving up on the middle ground in gaming because the results have been unimpressive so far. It’s ironic because the rest of the gaming industry is trying to follow the success of the Nintendo Wii and target a more moderate gamer.”

Gaming ARPU: Games & the Service Provider analyzes the market potential for integrating TV and gaming services through pay-TV providers, connected TVs, and game consoles.

U.S. Department of Commerce, Austin Energy to keynote Smart Energy Summit

International research firm Parks Associates announced executives from Austin Energy and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will keynote the Smart Energy Summit: Engaging the Consumer. The two keynotes provide unique perspectives from business and governmental sides of the residential energy management (REM) industry, offering expert insight on successful deployment strategies and the impact of U.S. funding for smart grid projects.

Recently, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced over $3 billion in funding for smart grid projects, with matching private-sector funds pushing the total over $8 billion. This funding has implications for technology developers, utilities, and end users, and today there is the right mix of government incentive, competition, and societal pressure to make smart energy solutions viable.

Dr. George W. Arnold, National Coordinator for Smart Grid Interoperability, NIST, U.S. Department of Commerce, will be the luncheon keynote on Tuesday, January 26. He will provide insight into government initiatives for promoting smart grid projects.

Andres Carvallo, CIO, Austin Energy, will present the morning keynote “A New Journey: Utility 2.0” on January 26. He will share his vision of the utility of the future, informed by his company’s experiences developing and deploying its Smart Grid. Mr. Carvallo will also highlight new business models and technologies designed to transform consumers into “prosumers” - producers and consumers all in one.

Mobile Internet and E-mail Services Jump in Popularity among U.S. Consumers

Adoption of non-text mobile data services has exceeded 40% of the more than 70 million U.S. broadband households with a mobile phone service, according to Parks Associates’ new consumer study Mobile Convergence: Platforms, Applications, and Services.

Over one-fourth of mobile service users have adopted mobile Internet and e-mail services, eclipsing other mobile data ARPU drivers like mobile TV and music, indicating that carriers will have to win subscribers through more “practical” services first. The fast adoption of mobile social networking and navigation services, which have both exceeded 10%, also indicates carriers can be successful in deploying popular Web activities as revenue-generating data services on the mobile platform.

Non-text mobile data services are central to wireless carriers’ long-term plans for revenue growth. The strong growth in usage of mobile Internet, e-mail, social networking, and navigation during the past two years shows consumers are eager for mobile applications that offer convenience and rich features. Use of multipurpose devices like smartphones is another driver. Smartphone penetration will exceed 30% of broadband households in 2009. These 20 million households will be a perfect target for carriers to market their mobile data services.
