Online Video Statistics

Here are some statistics we put together from our recently-completed report Internet Video: Direct-to-Consumer Services (Second Edition):
  • Eighty percent of U.S. adults in broadband homes engage in at least some form of Internet video viewing on a monthly basis.
  • Twenty-six million U.S. adult home broadband users watch streaming TV episodes on at least a monthly basis
  • About six million adults pay for premium Web video on a monthly basis (5% of U.S. adult home broadband users).
  • Among non-users of Internet video services, nearly 75% indicate that they don’t like watching video on a PC screen.
  • More than one-third of Internet video users engaged in monthly Internet video viewing indicate that they are watching more primetime television than two years ago, compared to 29% of all broadband users surveyed.
  • The top reasons noted for why consumers watch television shows online are (multiple responses allowed):
    o Catch up on missed shows (52%)
    o Watch shows for free (37%)
    o Have fewer advertisements (29%)
    o Forgot to program DVR to record a particular show (20%)
  • Thirty percent of Xbox 360 owners use their consoles on at least a monthly basis for Internet video applications, and 80% of these users pay for content on a monthly basis.
  • Thirty-five percent of broadband-connected TiVo owners access Amazon.com Unbox™ content on at least a monthly basis.
  • Sixteen percent of U.S. adult broadband users express an interest in an alternative Internet video-on-demand box such as an Apple TV or VUDU.
